Monster Hunter Rise: The Monster Mash

I’ve talked a lot this week about Monster Hunter Rise–because it’s amazing–but one thing I haven’t addressed yet is, well, the monsters. As one might expect, a game called Monster Hunter lives and dies by the monsters it contains, so you have to ask: how does Rise stack up?

Very well, it turns out! Rise‘s roster features some returning greats, as well as a handful of new faces. I want to focus on the monsters that are totally new to the franchise today, highlighting a few of my favorites. Full disclosure: I haven’t fought all of them yet, so this list will be a little incomplete, since I can’t address, say, Ragna-Kadaki, the big spider monster who I suspect I will enjoy fighting quite a bit.

One of the earliest new monsters you’ll come across is the Tetranadon, and I have to say, I love this guy! He’s a sort of kappa… duck… guy. It’s a charming and fun character design, and–

Man, what am I doing here? Trying to, like, describe what a monster looks like or how it fights or something? I don’t know. Look, the truth is, all I’ve done this week is work and play Monster Hunter. I chained myself to this three-posts-a-week thing, so I’ve got to put something up today, but I’ve already written about Monster Hunter Rise twice here and once for my newspaper column.

I know, I know. I could, theoretically, just… miss a post. It’s not like anything will happen. People probably wouldn’t even notice. But here’s the thing: I haven’t missed a post (outside of the week I intentionally took off) in the whole time I’ve been doing this blog. I feel like if I let myself miss one, it’s the beginning of the end. From then on, every time I’m just feeling lazy, I’ll go, “Eh, it’s not like I’ve never missed one before,” and before you know it, there won’t be a Roll With It anymore.

I just… I feel burned out lately. I feel like I’m always either writing one of these or working on The Animus Project or editing a podcast. So the last few weeks I’ve backed off. I’ve been holding off on Animus Project posts. I missed a podcast release because I couldn’t get the timing right for any of the recordings that were supposed to happen next. And yeah, I’m sort of worried that long-term, that’s going to hurt my motivation to keep those things going, but also, I just needed the break.

I guess what I’m getting at is, I don’t have a lot in the tank right now. I’m not going to sit here and write about how Magnamalo has a cool big scary tail. Does he? Yes! It’s terrifying. But writing about it doesn’t sound fun to me, and it’s probably not that interesting to read. I don’t feel like writing about anything, honestly, except I guess this rant about my writer’s block.

I don’t mean to be dour, or to complain too much. Things are going pretty good for me, all things considered. I just can’t muster up the energy to write right now. I just want to go play Monster Hunter. So that’s what I’m going to go do. And you know what? You should too! It’s a great game! Go get it. Play it with your friends. That’s what I’ve been doing all week, and it’s honestly exactly the boost I’ve been needing.

There’s something really special about hopping into a party with your pals and going after a bunch of big monsters. Just this week, I’ve made so many good memories. My crew (who I have dubbed Team Danger Walrus, against the wishes and better judgment of every other group member) has had wild Rampages; stumbled onto a three-way bout between a Barroth, Rathian, and Basarios; and discussed at length the proper temperature for soup. And all of it has kicked ass.

I guess that’s it for today. Thanks, Team Danger Walrus. It’s been a great time and I’m looking forward to more! And thanks for anyone who took the time to read my venting. The blog will (probably) be more normal next week.
